The choir was established in 1993 and decided to apply for charitable status at the AGM on 1st. February 2004. This process was completed on 9th. May 2005. The charity is an unincorporated association, registered under the Charities Act 1960, registration number 1109375.
Governing Document
The purposes and administration of the choir are regulated by the Heritage Singers Constitution, which was drawn up and adopted by the choir in 2004, and amended in April 2005.
To promote, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of choral music in all its aspects by the provision of music for church services, the presentation of public choral concerts and for the general purpose of such charitable bodies, or for such other purposes as shall be exclusively charitable as the committee may from time to time determine.
This year the choir has:
· visited several churches to assist in worship;
· performed several concerts;
· sung at a number of weddings to raise funds;
· spent a weekend in Northumberland where two concerts were given along with morning and eveing service at Hexham Abbey;
· visited Budapest to sing at three concerts and featured the music of living English composers; and
· finished paying off the outstanding cost of the USA tour in 2005.
The transactions during the year and the financial position are set out on pages 5 to 6. It is the intention of the trustees to continue to use available funds to promote, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of choral music.
The Trustees
The trustees who served the charity during the period were as follows:
Mr. Tim Knight
Mr. Edward Turner
Mrs. Julie Smith
Mr Alan Smith
Mrs Joanne Shaw
The power of appointing and removing trustees is vested in the trustees for the time being.
Accounting Policies
Basis of Accounting
The financial statements have been prepared as a receipts and payments account, and in accordance with the Charities Act 1993 and the Statement of Recommended Practice on accounting by charities.
The Charities Act 1993 requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity at the ending of the year and of the surplus or deficiency for the year then ended.
The trustees are required to select suitable accounting policies, as described above, and then apply them on a consistent basis, making judgements and estimates that are prudent and reasonable. It is the responsibility of the trustees to determine and maintain the level of reserves that it is appropriate to maintain in order to meet its objectives.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to comply with The Charities Act 1993. The trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2007
This report on the financial statements of the Heritage Singers for the year ended 31 December 2007, which are set out on pages 5 and 6, is in respect of an examination carried out in accordance with section 43 of the Charities Act 1993 and with the choir’s constitution.
Basis of Opinion
We conducted our examination in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the Charities Act 1993. That examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the choir and a comparison of the accounts with those records. It includes considering any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
We planned and performed our examination so as to obtain all the information and explanations which we considered necessary in order to provide us with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from material misstatement, whether caused by fraud or other irregularity or error. In forming our opinion we also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements.
Choir examiners’ statement
In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention:
· which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements;
– to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Charities Act 1993; and
– to prepare financial statements, which accord with the accounting records and comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 1993
have not been met; or
· to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
